Dear District 5 Star Sailors (and beyond),
In keeping with our promise in May we are writing to give you an update on the District 5 (California) Star racing schedule for the balance of 2020. Please see the attached.
Unfortunately, the Lipton Cup in Santa Barbara, scheduled for June 27-28th, has been cancelled with no re-schedule date.
For now, the rescheduled King of Spain event (July 18-19) at CalYC in Marina Del Rey remains on the schedule as does the SDYC Olympic Classes Regatta (August 7-8). Both these events are subject to “GO/NO-GO” decisions by the respective Organizing Authorities in the coming weeks. We will keep you informed when he hear either way.
Next we have exciting news; NHYC plans to hold both the Baxter Bowl (August 15-16) and the North American Championship (August 18-22) on their originally scheduled dates in August.
It bears mentioning that this is not a decision that has been taken lightly. Host NHYC’s Race Management Team has consulted extensively with the Starclass leadership in recent weeks. They are going to great lengths to a plan a safe event; especially as it relates to the current public health situation. Luckily Newport Beach is located in central Orange County, CA which has been only lightly touched by the COVID-19 outbreak. CDC guidelines and social distancing protocols will be adhered to. While shoreside social activities may suffer some, your District Secretaries feel this is going to be a great opportunity to get on the water and enjoy some racing in a safe environment. Since this information “leaked” in recent days we have heard from numerous teams from inside and outside the 5th District who are now planning on attending.
